visual production evaluation

4 Years Later

Liam Aspinall (415796)
unit 6: visual production evaluation

-   Introduction
This unit is to explore the visual side of media a planning and preparation of get equipment to get the shot we want.
The other side of this unit is to make generic a DVD and poster and for this I chose the film diary of the dead by George A. Romero because it is a classic film and it comes out of the minds of one of the greatest directors of the horror genre and because it sort of relates to this course as it’s about media students.

Starting points
This image is from my mood board it portrays the style of genre I am aiming for.
The genre I am aiming for in my final project is apocalypse style of film, this photo show it by having one person it the shot being surrounded by decaying and destroyed structure emphasise the apocalypse genre so that why I pick the location of Erne farm for one of the reasons because of the fact it is abandoned and left to decay by weather which makes it suit the ideal place to film. The weather plays another factor in this because of how grim and bleak it look.
What gave me the idea of doing this for a trailer is my hobbies of Urbex (Urban Exploring) and my friends who just said to me to make it about something I love doing so that’s why I chose to do apocalypse style of trailer with help from them being the actors in it, which in return helps them in there get free promoting but I did have to pay them to help (I pay them in food)

Why
A lot of the shots I use was mainly stereotypical of a horror genre like the tracking shots so it focuses on the main protagonists more to conceal the identity of the antagonist for as long as possible until I thought he should be revealed to add suspense on why and who is chasing him.
I sort of never add the reason why he was being chased so the trailer sorts of makes no sense to anyone who wasn’t there helping... but the reason why he was being chased was because was immune to the virus and then saying that I never said how the apocalypse stared but if we get to make a short film I will be able to go in depths more.
I used other shots like the mid to wide and high angle shots to help show of the location of where we film it and to get more of the Action shots in one frame

What – description
We were asked to make a trailer with the minim of 45seconds but I was under that by 9 seconds with 36 seconds this is an improvement on my first attempt of it was 30 seconds. I normally edit along to the beat of music and the song I used was the ending of the song I used in my short film Stalker. The song is call cannibal by ross bugden I found on soundcloud. I found the song had a nice up beat to it that went well with the visual effects.

5 Production

I decided to go with actors I know we took up a lot of the roles our self. I was mainly the director and camera man but Jared (the protagonist) help set up some off the shots because of the how the fight scene was choreographed in a small space and we didn’t want them to come too close to the camera. We did get help on the second day of filming by my friend tabby and girlfriend they both help in the scene where the respirator is thrown out of shot by Ethan, tabby had to catch it so it won’t break when it hit the floor and they was both sat on the sofa on the cut scenes back at my house

6 Creation
I decide to use Sony Vegas pro 2013 on my home pc to edit most of the trailer instead off the macs at colleges that use adobe premiere pro, because there was more effects I had available on my pc than there was on the macs like the TV glitching effect which I thought went really well part from the fact I had no controls on when it glitch in on the clip because I haven’t learnt how get them to work at the time I want them to. I did use Premiere Pro and Photoshop to make the title that appears both in the poster and the ending of the trailer. I did use a text maker for the letting online to make the text I use.

7  Conclusion
Well what I think about this is project is that I could of done better there was a few things I could of done better but we didn’t try because of how long it would f took to get the resources there and set them up it would have been to late and dark it would of involve trying to get a 4wd truck in throw a small gate without draw attention and saying that the lights on the truck would probably be to bright and make the shot look shit.
I had another problem with lighting was in the living room you could see my shadow and the camera on the wall as I move closer towards the TV.

There was a few things I like was the some of the high angles and the tracking shots. The other thing I like was the black and white shot which I add more tone and vibrant to the shots by playing around with colour corrections to try and set the mood better.

The finally reason why I like it was the fact I got work with my friends on this project and got to travel and have the capable and the equipment to do this.

Final Teaser Trailer (visual production)

Poster Print Screens

The original photo is still shot from a unused clip because it was the clear still
I add multiply filters and colour layers to get the look I want
I Add some zombies in the background to add more effect to make it apocalypse horror
I use text templates I found off google to make the title and the number 4

Single Pre-Production Blogpost (visual production)

Mood Board Ideas
The photos of my friends is because they are some of the best actors and cosplayers I know and they stood by me through the toughest parts of my life and always manage to make me look on the brighter side so I owe it to them to help free promote there talent and skills to help their career because they're helping mine

The photo of the abandoned corridor is there because it symbolises my urge explore the unknown and the forgotten and to photograph the world from my perspective and to view beauty off the decay. My friend silhouette represents the past and  how do corridor would have been full of life.

The post-apocalyptic photo is there because I believe sooner or later the world is going to experience some sort of dramatic event that will wipe out alot of humanity and only leave a few survivors

I aim to incorporate all of this into my final trailer because a lot of this has be a big impact on my life since leaving High School.

Script

This is my rough script / storyboard.

I had to change quite a bit of it for few reasons because some of it wasn't possible with the space with in the location and other parts required way too much editing and focus on detail to do with in a very short amount of time because some of the people were not available.

But i managed to keep it roughly the same as the original  story line.

Film Genre Analysis

Horror-
Stereotypical horror film is that it a lot of blood and gore and the odd jump scare that enhanced by music to add more dramatic in to the film.
a lot of the horror films use dark and dingy locations and often a lot of the scenes use the weather to its advantages for example the rain and fog can set suspense to scene in the movie

Comedy-
A stereotypical comedy movie is often very bright and colorful. And often the leading acting roles are by famous comedians actors like Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, the list goes on.

But comedy can go between to types:
-  Ones of children to understand that are often reference to as family comedies for example "Mr Popper's Penguins, Big Mommas House and Home Alone" which are made for children to understand.
-  Then you got adult comedy that often use a sense of humor that the older generation would understand the references more. For example the film "TED, Scary Movie and jack ass" all contain some sexual or drug references that younger people wouldn't understand yet.

Poster And DVD Cover

My original movie poster made in to a DVD case.

i use some of my poster image like the camera and i also use some of the original DvD text and description to save time on typing it out. i mess up with age rating because it is actually 18 but i put is a 12 for some reason.

College Short Film Review (Stalker)

We where the set a task of making a horror genre short film.
So we're set up into a production team at random by our tutor.
Our director was Nikita.
The cameraman was Ed.
I was the video editor.
And the fixer was Jack

I know I have to write my own review on my own my own editing skills and Ed's filming skills.
factors Is actually pretty much hate this video because  because of the tripod, audio and how slow Jack was walking and the fact that he mest up couple of times like  like between 1:27 and 1:28 if two separate shots yet I had to sync them up as the best I could.

Because in the first shot he didn't look out the window like he was supposed to.
In the second shot we started filming and he walked around the corner bit weirdly so I had to cut it and mach the two pieces as smoothly as possible

in the first scene we had a failure with the tripod where we forgot to loosen the scrwo that allows us to Pan upwards so it jolted up in stead of a smooth tilt

with in the first 3 scenes had to be sped up because Jack's walking speed so we had some strange movements by people in the background off the shots like the speed of some of them walking with superhuman speed.

things I think work well was the color change between the scenes with Jack and the girl who's stalking because it emphasizes who his target was going to be in this case my friend Amelia from level 2 art who i ask to help in her 20 min lunch break.

Another thing I think work as well was the music emphasized the Loneliness he had until he found his victim And the spike in audio add drama to the video so does the raising heartbeat  and scream at the end of the videos was be added as a jump scare

Suicide Squad Trailer 2016 (college Edit)

We was given the task of making the teaser trailer out of some brand new film release trailers so I chose the new Suicide Squad trailer.

What I thought worked well was the music and the clip I chose for the video because it adds more action feel to the video instead of a calming relaxing like the Originals song did.

Choosing the song for it I had help with by Jay.
I mainly chose the action clips because the background song emphasizes that this film is an action genre.

What I could have done better was to mix the clips better
and do a little bit better on fading and time besides that I think I did a really good job of it

original movie poster design (diary of the dead)

This is my final piece

I decided to pick diary of the dead is my movie poster because I like the horror genre and the director George A. Romero set the standards of most modern day zombie based films and TV shows .

This is what I was going to originally uses my poster but I found the image to be to a bit to computer animated of the original movie poster design  it made the camera in the foreground stand out a lot.

Original background was from a game called Left 4 Dead, I've never played the game but originally chosen this photo because of their background scenery and on the fact that there was a zombie dead center in the photo so it make it easier when editing one into it

In the original movie poster use a flip screen camera but went along the lines of using a DLSR camera because it was hard to find a flip screen camera at the right angle for the photo I wanted to use
I came across this photo by typing name DSLR wallpapers for computers

Like in the original movie poster the camera has a smashed screen so I decide to use this photo which is another wallpaper but this time for mobile phone.

this is something I have added on my own according to make the photo more unique, you normally see this on a smashed TV screen. I thought it would look cool on a DSLR camera screen as well.

This is the new background photo decide to use. I'd found it on my Tumblr news feed on the post-apocalyptic website.

The text and the five star rating I stole from one of the original movie posters because it was easier than me typing it up and finding information out online

I crop the camera and removed the photos from the background And the LED screen. Which took me about 45 minutes to do.

The crack in the LED screen took a lot longer because of how highly detailed it was.
I had to go in to find the details because I wanted to make it transparent but yet have to crack still visible.

I use the multi coloured cracked screen to emphasize that the screen is actually broken.

Then I added the background I wanted to use and fitted it perfectly and lined it up.
Then I duplicate the background layer crop it down to make a smaller photograph of the LED screen on the camera then moved it so it went into the eye of the camera.

T
hen I warp the original background image and add a filter layer between the writing and the background and camera.
Then I started to blend the camera so it would fit nicely and wouldn't stand out as much on the background layer.

This is the similar movie poster that I was trying to recreate.

Suicide Squad Review

The new Suicide Squad movie is is an action-based genre according to the imdb website.

The movie trailer within the first two scenes do not show what a basic action movie should look like. The first couple of clips show some people sitting around the table eating a meal at the fancy restaurant.

The next couple of scenes there are some military guards coming out of an elevator which source shows that something is about to happen or escalate but it is actually prison guards in high secure prison for the mentally insane.
it keeps on switching between shots of the restaurant and the prison to help build-up suspense that something bad is about to happen.

When it has a random cut scene to a woman exploring in a dark cave which to me this is completely irrelevant to the whole story line and plot of the trailer but the woman talking audio overlay says "Superman was just a symbol for them to creep out from the shadows" and the cave is quite Dark.

When it goes back to the scene inside the prison with prison guards running  down the long corridor this shows that something bad is about to happen
because they are carrying riot Gear.

then it goes to a cut scene back into the restaurant with a woman and a senior high ranking military officer (how I can tell this is because of the wing badge above all the bar medals)

then it goes back to the scene with the prison guards with riot gear about to enter a cell with a woman(Harley Quinn) in and smaller cell inside the bigger cell hanging upside down from some embedding she has tied together to make a makeshift rope it looks like something you'd see out of an old second world war film when a prisoner of war is trying to escape. But unlike a prisoner of war she is using it to do gymnastics Style dancing that you would often see in a Circus.
then it does a fade between 4 other characters including harlequin and deadshot when they have been locked away in prison.

then it did quick flash scene of two guys shooting up   what appears to be a hospital in stupid outfits, then  it goes back to a clip of Deadshot outside of prison walking with a woman at what appears to be Christmas time because of the snow, the Christmas tree and the nun collecting money for charity  which is your stereotypical style of Christmas in movies.

the movie trailer starts to become more action packed by first showing Deadshot abseiling off a rooftop and then  it goes back to showing the people shooting up the hospital in stupid outfits.

The next scene seems quite weird it appears to be a girl sitting in the bathtub full of blood and also has reeds in it,  but the star which is drawn on the wall behind her is a aquarian star or unicursal hexagram  it's supposed to represent great Magic and power and the gates of Atlantis.  (source of information is my friend Rebecca and her massive knowledge about supernatural stuff and also this link http://symboldictionary.net/?p=1367)

The next scene shows suicide squad which is built up of multiple villains from the DC Universe which has joined up with a military Force to execute military style Tactics and fighting
the scene after start showing the supervillains families and this sort of makes me feel like there fighting for the right to see their family and loved ones because back  in the high secure prison they weren't allowed visitors

a lot the next scenes start to show more action based because there is a lot more fighting in them and a larger military presence  this is shown by the military helicopters and troops. it also shows there is a larger rebel Force that is causing problems that's the reason why the suicide squad was assembled. But it shows between the two forces which one is more powerful by Tactics, precision and training.

the next scene which only lasts a couple seconds  which shows you quite a lot  of information on who the proper bad guy in this movie is....  Aka the Joker the  the scenes that follow this all flash by but they all action packed because there is  a lot of violent things happening in them to catch the viewers eye.

In one scene there is Harley Quinn who has stolen a posh fancy car with what appears to be Batman holding onto the roof for dear life and then it goes back to doing flash scene which are full of action fighting scenes and a helicopter crash which is all your basics stuff in an action movie

the scene afterwards is a scene on subway stair well between Harley Quinn and a guy.  And the guy basically says "you know what they say about the crazy Ones" as a reference to that they all being released from a mental hospital and H
arley Quinn responses to is just "huh"  but then add demonic laughter as it fades into the next scene where the joker is walking into a room and then it fades again to a shot facing upwards at the Joker where he has to electric shock pads in his hands.. This makes the viewer feel like he's got more power over them.

Well this is my review on the suicide squad trailer I doubt it's what our teacher asked us to do but I completely forgot so I decided to hold review on the trailer instead
